Cybercriminals might pose as charities, activists, news media, support groups, or some other organisation related to the shootings. They send messages over email and social media in order to fraudulently solicit donations, trick victims into giving up personal information, or distribute malware. In many cases, phishing involves getting the victim to click on a link that leads to a fake website. This website might look identical to a legitimate website, but in fact it is meant to steal passwords, credit card details and other information.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, treat any unsolicited email or messages with scepticism. Check the domain of the sender\’s email address (whatever comes after the @ sign) and see if it matches the official website domain. Don\’t click on links or attachments, and never send sensitive information over email. Always do research on charities before handing money over.
