When it comes to scalability and agility modern cloud architecture gives organizations a leg up. Unfortunately, too many cloud projects stall at the outset. And even if you get past implementation, increasingly complex operations can cause heartburn, too.

Data privacy and security regulations and industry standards require you to secure your customers' data. While cloud providers do a lot for their customers, organizations are still the responsible caretaker for data security. Cloud data is highly mobile. Dev-ops teams need to be as agile as possible to innovate – especially when embracing state of the art ways of orchestrating and developing applications – like cloud-native. Traditional security architectures are often incompatible with modern operational requirements, automation, languages, and orchestration frameworks.

Unfortunately, hackers seem to be always one step ahead. It’s nearly impossible to prevent all breaches – especially when it comes to insider attacks – not to mention gaps in security talent and expertise resulting in misconfigurations.

Therefore, the most important thing tech leaders, embracing the cloud, can do is reducing the risks associated with breaches. With the growing number of breaches and new, stricter regulations all around the world, sophisticated data protection is a must. Implementing Data-Centric Security, which means protecting data at the earliest possible point and de-protecting it only when absolutely necessary reduces the risk of a breach significantly. Data-centric security enables companies to implement a zero-trust architecture. Using format-preserving protection methods, keeping the usability of data, allows employees to run workloads and perform analytics on protected data.

It’s all about risk. Risk associated with data loss or misuse. By focusing on protecting the data, companies can reduce risk significantly and ensure compliance. In simple words: the more complex and hybrid / multi-cloud your environment, the less effective classic perimeter defense, the more important becomes data security.
