In the wake of SAP’s announcement to collaborate with Yale University to foster and promote cybersecurity talent, cyber security experts provide an insight on the importance of diversity in cybersecurity hiring.
This is an absolutely great mission forward. If we want to increase diversity and inclusion within cybersecurity, we have to make sure there are mentorship opportunities, as they allow us to have a greater depth of what is expected, and allow us to learn skills so we’re ready to rock the workplace.
To be able to have diversity & inclusion you have to make sure you can provide it to a wider audience – to an audience that maybe couldn’t afford to go to a conference or maybe nervous about
To be able to have diversity & inclusion you have to make sure you can provide it to a wider audience – to an audience that maybe couldn’t afford to go to a conference or maybe nervous about their safety going to and attending a conference, for example. Having a live stream provides an opportunity for people to keep learning and to engage within the community. And of course scholarships and funding is a must-have, since it’s very expensive to get into this field. By reducing costs, the people that want to enter cybersecurity can get in.
I really do hope that this is an opportunity to ensure that we also give people the skills to navigate the workplace when it comes to diversity and inclusion because, unfortunately, we’re still in a place where we need to keep working towards it. Any lessons or teachings or strategies – such as around boundaries, micro-gressions, or discrimination when it comes to pay and titles, etc. – these are important things for us to learn. How to negotiate a salary? What are the red flags when interviewing or job postings? These are skills that we don’t usually have and I hope this program covers these necessary pieces to set up attendees for success.
