It has been reported that INTERPOL (the International Criminal Police Organisation) has warned that cybercriminals are increasingly attempting to lockout hospitals out of critical systems by attempting to deploy ransomware on their networks despite the currently ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

There is little honour amongst thieves, and it is shameful that hospitals are seeing an increase in the number of ransomware attacks during the COVID-10 pandemic. The good news is that the vast majority of hospitals haven\’t let their guard down. Their security teams are working harder than ever to protect patient data and proprietary information. I strongly urge all hospitals to regularly back up their data and filter out potentially malicious websites and emails, as that is the first step in mitigating the ransomware risk.

The hospitals and their security partners need to also take a proactive approach to security by hunting for suspicious behaviour whilst improving the security hygiene of their networks. This can be achieved through security awareness training and educating employees to not fall for popular phishing email scams or by visiting websites that they aren\’t familiar with. The good news is that advanced anti-ransomware software is readily available from many different vendors. Deploying the right solutions will make ransomware attacks less profitable for the hackers, making hospitals a less attractive vertical to attack.
