As hackers become ever more sophisticated in their methods, high profile brands and organisations must take tangible steps to protect customer data. Moving away from age old passwords is a significant component of this and we welcome the news that Instagram is rolling out the latest in two-factor authentication technology.
A two-factor authentication process typically requires customers to authenticate using their phone – something they “have”, in addition to the existing password – something they “know”, which will result in a code being sent to the phone number when a login is required. This facilitates a fast and more secure means of accessing an account.
We hope to see more high profile and consumer facing brands taking the necessary steps to adopt two-factor authentication. This will not only ensure that sensitive customer data is better protected, but can also help to mitigate reputational damages and financial losses.
