A report by Kaspersky Lab has found that the rise of IoT within industrial organisations is putting the likes of power plants, manufacturers and water treatment centres at risk of suffering a cyber attack. Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of companies believe that ICS security risks are more likely with IoT. The report also states that they are investing in security for their IT networks, but are ‘leaving the doors to their operational technology wide open’. Javvad Malik, Security Advocate at AlienVault commented below.
Javvad Malik, Security Advocate at AlienVault:
“IoT is built around convenience, to be able to quickly implement and start providing connectivity. However, security is more often than not neglected in the design and build of these devices. Furthermore, organisation do not always have the capabilities or resources in place in order to monitor IoT, or detect when they have been compromised. For IoT, particularly ones deployed in ICS, rigorous security controls should be deployed to not only protect IoT, but also to be able to detect where it is under attack, and to quickly recover and respond to threats.”
