Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack by hackers reported in Ireland, the country’s biggest telco said that its email system suffered a suspected attack. The attack is said to have put 400,000 of Eir users at risk, and customers with @eircom.net addresses reportedly began experiencing problems accessing their mail. Stephen Gates, Chief Research Intelligence Analyst at NSFOCUS commented below.
Stephen Gates, Chief Research Intelligence Analyst at NSFOCUS:
“Most people believe that DDoS attacks only threaten websites. Any device with an IP address can fall victim. Mail servers, DNS servers, and even network security equipment can fall prey to these attacks. In this case, the motivations for the attacks on Eir are still unclear. From monetary gain to hacktivism, the motivations that spawn these attacks are extremely broad. The real question is, why was Eir impacted? The right DDoS defences can easily solve these problems, without incurring outages.”
