Response Comments On 2020 The Busiest Year On Record For Cyber Attacks

Covid-19, remote working and the resulting business struggles are largely the cause for the surge in cyber-attacks facing companies throughout 2020 and hackers are clearly targeting these vulnerable times to commit crime. In fact, Barracuda’s research reveals insights about how targeted attacks evolved last year and ways in which cybercriminals are maximizing their impact through the exploitation of fears around the COVID-19 pandemic . Business email compromise (BEC) now makes up 12% of the spear-phishing attacks analysed, an increase from just 7% in 2019 and 72% of COVID-19-related attacks are scamming, meaning that attackers prefer to use COVID-19 in their less targeted scamming attacks that focus on fake cures and donations.

Business owners in the UK have a responsibility to protect their customers and employees against all data-theft and hacking attempts. They can do this by equipping their servers with cloud-based firewalls and AI-enabled security defence applications, alongside diligent security and online threat awareness training for remote employees. Sophisticated email security can also be extremely effective in blocking large amounts of malicious content aimed at busy or susceptible workers

Open University Bombarded By Over 1 Million Email Attacks In 2020 – Experts Reaction

it is important that security standards are maintained, and the right software and training is constantly updated
The nature of the Open University, and the fact that a majority of its courses take place online, means cyber attackers will inevitably attempt to target the abundance of data stored in its servers, hence the significant quantity of scam attacks facing the institution. The nature of the Open University, and the fact that a majority of its courses take place online, means cyber attackers will inevitably attempt to target the abundance of data stored in its servers, hence the significant quantity of scam attacks facing the institution. To add to this, our recent research revealed that spear-phishing attacks are disproportionately targeting educational institutions across the world, with over 3.5 million phishing emails hitting over 1,000 global schools and Universities from June through to September of this year. Whilst it is certainly a good thing that the Open University has, so far, managed to successfully protect itself from a data breach, it is important that security standards are maintained, and the right software and training is constantly updated, to keep pace with the rapidly changing cyber threat-scape. Furthermore, due to the sensitivity of information stored in its servers, education institutions must ensure that all data is backed up in a third-party, encrypted cloud backup solution, which will also enable protection from the growing trend in ransomware attacks facing Universities.”  Read Less

Expert Reason For UK On Number 2nd In World For Major Cyber Attacks

Our recent research found that almost half of global businesses have encountered at least one cyber security scare since the start of Covid-19.
The UK is home to some of the world’s leading businesses and organisations, and clearly, this makes it a hot target for serious cyber attacks – many of which are looking to take advantage of personal data for the purpose of financial gain. The UK has seen plenty of headline-grabbing and organisation-crippling cyber attacks and data breaches since 2006, and it’s important that all organisations observe and learn from these events, in order to ultimately decelerate the trend of severe.....Read More
The UK is home to some of the world’s leading businesses and organisations, and clearly, this makes it a hot target for serious cyber attacks – many of which are looking to take advantage of personal data for the purpose of financial gain. The UK has seen plenty of headline-grabbing and organisation-crippling cyber attacks and data breaches since 2006, and it’s important that all organisations observe and learn from these events, in order to ultimately decelerate the trend of severe cyber attacks aimed at our nation. Improving mass security effectiveness across businesses should start with education, and all employees should be properly trained on how to spot suspicious content and securely avoid interacting with it. Furthermore, CISO’s and business decision makers must implement sophisticated cyber software, such as AI-powered email inbox defence software, in order to limit employees’ exposure to malicious content. Our recent research found that almost half of global businesses have encountered at least one cyber security scare since the start of Covid-19, and we can only expect this cyber threat to escalate, particularly when employees are still working remotely and companies are in a fragile state of affairs, with many limiting security budgets in order to pay for Covid-19 restrictions. Thus, change must occur now.  Read Less

In many cases, the hacker creates a fraudulent, but realistic-looking, email request for payment of an invoice or transfer of funds. The perpetrator will often use the company logo, email signature, and fake purchase order number in their correspondence to increase the likelihood of being believed. The victim, assuming they are just doing their job, makes the transfer in response to the request, often repeating the process over time, leading to the company losing tens of thousands, if not millions of pounds. This type of spear-phishing attack has been trending, with Barracuda Sentinel detecting 467,825 spear-phishing email attacks between March 1 and March 23, a 667% increase. Tackling this issue requires companies to invest in the very latest email protection systems and also ensure that every employee is acutely aware of these scams and how they operate.  Read Less

We’ve seen a sharp rise in these kinds of schemes, often carefully crafted and timed alongside new government funding announcements to increase the likelihood of duping unsuspecting workers into handing over personal financial data. Tackling this growing threat requires businesses to have the necessary security systems in place to identify suspicious emails and texts, as well as warning employees to remain vigilant against requests for private information from unverified sites and URLs, often sent to their phone. All it takes is one mistake and cyber criminals could get hold of the full details of a company debit card and bank account, causing serious problems for business owners in a particularly tough time  Read Less
