Google famously encapsulated the hopes and dreams of the internet age when it optimistically declared that its mission was “to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Others have taken a rather more sinister take on the accessibility of information: hacking by criminals, tracking by corporations, and nefarious attempts at cracking encryption codes by government agencies such as the NSA and GCHQ.

The cost of all this to our privacy is immense, but with 13.1 million annual victims of identity theft in America alone, there is a very real security cost as well. This is estimated to be in the region of $18 billion dollars.
