‘What 2 things are most likely to change the security industry in the next 2 years? And why?’
One big change has to do with the so-called Internet of Things. As computing systems in cars, refrigerators, thermostats, home alarm systems etc. become increasingly connected to the Internet, researchers will be devoting more of their firepower on finding the weaknesses. We already saw it with the work of Barnaby Jack, who was heavily engaged in finding hackable weaknesses in medical equipment. As the danger increases, so will the opportunities for security companies who come up with a strong response.
Another big change that’s already happening and will continue to develop in the next two years lies in the evolving thinking of security practitioners when it comes to privacy vs. security. After 9-11, privacy got shafted in the rush to build tougher security, but we’ve seen how that has led to governments abusing authority. The NSA case is a prime example, though outrage over TSA (Transportation Security Administration) tactics in the airports had already started the ball rolling. In the next two years watch for today’s outraged reactions to translate into new policies governing privacy.
