Lord Leveson was yesterday called to appear before MPs – amid growing anger at his failure to reveal widespread phone-hacking by big business.

The legal chief, who oversaw the inquiry into newspaper ethics, has been summoned to explain himself in front of the powerful Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

Unless he snubs the committee, which would spark a bitter constitutional battle between Parliament and the courts, he will appear ahead of the July summer recess.

Officials from the Serious Organised Crime Agency, Britain’s equivalent of the FBI, have also been ordered to appear and hand over all the evidence they have on the issue.

The developments came after it emerged Lord Justice Leveson was told about the so-called “blue chip hacking” by law firms and telephone companies during his inquiry into press behaviour.
