Cyber security is still a relatively new area, constantly evolving as a result of the tech savvy world in which we live. But what’s it all about? Nick Seaver is Partner in Deloitte’s Advisory group, specialising in advising financial clients on managing a wide range of operational and technology risks – including cyber security. He lets us in on the kinds of cyber security roles out there, what it takes, and tells us all about the new De Montfort University Deloitte MSc in Cyber Security…

Could you explain what is meant by ’cyber security’?

The rapid pace of change in technology has provided huge opportunities for organisations to develop new business models, services, products and distribution channels. However, this has also led to an increasingly sophisticated and complex set of security challenges to protect these systems from a wide range of parties, such as criminals, terrorists, “hacktivists” and hostile states.

Cyber Security is the term for the protection of these systems or, more specifically, the collection of technologies and processes designed to protect these on-line systems, networks and data from unauthorised access, destruction or change.
