Simply put, work consists of one or more tasks that are executed using a process or series of processes to ensure the outcome is as close to ideal as possible. It can vary from extremely consistent to dynamically variable based on changing circumstances.

Taking just a brief look back at the early industrial age we can see that on the whole work was done by people. From mill workers to car assembly lines, it was primarily all physical work. However, as the industrial revolution took hold, automation started to play a greater role in getting work done and growing productivity.

As the information age expanded, more non-physical work such as share trading, accounting and modelling has been automated through the application of software. In the post industrial age machines and software have combined with the help of the ‘Internet of Everything’ to create a step change, enabling work to be done in many dimensions. The future of work will see technology moving beyond simple automation of planned and unplanned work flows to accommodate a wider range of participants in the working environment including, machines.
