We live in the age of ‘cyber warfare’. Today’s most sophisticated hackers don’t just have the power to steal confidential credit card details or email addresses at the click of a button, but many can hack into a country’s critical national infrastructure, infiltrate the emails of a large corporation, or even break into the highly confidential information of government departments. The threat is here today, and there is too much to lose if global governments are not prepared for the new era of ‘cyber warfare.’
With the rise of digital services across the global public sector landscape, it is critical that every effort is made to secure and encrypt confidential citizen information. The scale of this hack on the Philippines’ election website further conveys how the future of data lies in ‘privacy by design’. Building a robust cyber security infrastructure cannot be an afterthought or a ‘bolt-on’ for global governments or businesses in our digital economy.
