Following the news about Shadow Brokers Data Dump, IT security experts from Tenable and Cryptzone commented below. Cris Thomas, Strategist at Tenable Network Security: “The good news is that there appears to be a patch available for just about everything in the package. In some cases — such as the exploits for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 — there will never be any patch since support for those products has long since been discontinued. Any CISOs who still have these older systems on their networks are now vulnerable to attack and will be defenseless targets to anyone who is able to…

One in five British companies has been hacked by cyber criminals over the past year, a new survey has indicated. Further, only a quarter (24%) of the survey’s 1,200 respondents said their business had security measures in place to guard against hacking. IT security experts from Imperva, Tripwire, Cylance and Corero Network Security commented below. Amichai Shulman, CTO and CO-Founder at Imperva: “Our experience show that 100% of businesses are under attack. With 20% of companies being breached while only 24% believe they have proper security stance we can only repeat the cliché that there are two types of business those that have…

The WSJ is among media reporting that the FDA has just issued a stern warning to Abbott for failing to properly investigate and resolve cybersecurity risks and battery malfunctions for its pacemaker and defibrillator devices. Rod Schultz, VP of Product at Rubicon Labs commented below. Rod Schultz, VP of Product at Rubicon Labs: “The FDA warning to Abbott is an echo of challenges we’ve seen in other technology verticals that are built with batteries and software. Recent changes in Government policy and market dynamics mean that the level of visible competition between universities is much more apparent than ever before. These historically individual organisations are now having to embrace commercial reality and adapt to new pressures in order to compete. Firstly, the increase of tuition fees means that, more than ever, students are now ‘consumers’ with very real purchasing power. Secondly, universities have to be self-funding and are diversifying as they search for ways to increase revenue and cut costs. Thirdly, ‘challenger universities’ are growing in number and popularity, some specialising in professional qualifications, others with…
Soon to be enacted across the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation – better known as GDPR – has caused no end of concern among UK CIOs. Although it represents good news for consumers, from a business perspective, things aren’t quite so simple. While the regulation will be helpful in making it easier and more cost effective for cloud providers to offer pan-EU solutions, as well as making customers feel safer in entrusting valuable data to third-parties, GDPR is likely to have serious implications for Europe’s approach to disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC). For a start, there is a significant difference between the…
If we split IoT devices into three tiers, the top tier would consist of well-protected devices, like laptops that are complex machines with plenty of security software. The second tier would be made of occasional use, moderate-complexity devices like thermostats, TVs, and refrigerators. Then we have the third tier. These devices include HVAC, badges, implants, and electronic locks. Initially none of these tiers solely seem to pose a problem. However with more and more hackers taking advantage of these vulnerable, third tier devices to access valuable data, and with 96% of IT security professionals expecting to see an increase in security…
