Following the news that Italian luxury fashion house Zegna has just confirmed it was victim of a ransomware attack in August 2021, joining Moncler, Boggi Milano and Guess, amongst others, that have been victims, Industry leaders commented below on how data exfiltration is the common thread between all ransomware attacks.

When it comes to recent ransomware incidents, the Italian luxury fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna joins other fashion houses including Moncler, Boggi Milano and Guess to name a few. Zegna may have just recently disclosed the incident was indeed ransomware, however, the RansomEXX criminal gang claimed the attack and admitted to exfiltrating 20.74GB of data from the company, as BlackFog reported on in its State of Ransomware report in August last year. The common thread associated with all ransomware attacks is data exfiltration. Data is after all the crown jewels of any organisation, from customer data, trade secrets and confidential employee information. If organisations continue to focus on defensive cybersecurity approaches, attackers will continue to focus on and profit from extortion. Only by preventing the unauthorised exfiltration of data can organisations really win the war on ransomware.
