“IoT device proliferation is a very real issue for IT. They range from sanctioned devices, used for business purposes, to consumer devices brought into the network by employees. Having written policies pertaining to security is as useless as speed limit signs. Nobody pays any attention, and without enforcement mechanisms in place mayhem ensues. Employees must first know about written policies (which often they don’t), and even when they do know, they must make a conscious decision to abide by them (which often they choose not to). Without dynamic identification, classification and policy enforcement these devices pose a serious security threat. IoT devices must be deployed in a zero trust mode, with an enforcement policy of least privilege. Anything less leaves the business open to significant risk.”
