Corero Network Security President Andrew Lloyd reports findings that differ from vendor statements issued this week about the impact of the take-down of Webstresser (one vendor is reported to claim that DDoS attacks fell 60 percent in one week after WebStresser was closed down). Corero findings indicate that DDoS attacks actually rose on average in the second half of April, 2018.

“We’re skeptical about the Link11 conclusions (which have been reported this week). Given the volume of attacks, we seriously doubt that Webstresser.org was responsible for 60% of all the attacks in Europe. It is possible that Webstresser made disproportionate use of Link11’s circuits.
“Our own evidence is that attack volumes globally and in Europe have, if anything, increased in the week since the Europol take-down action. Please find below our year-to-date daily observed attacks chart:
He continues: “You’ll note that attack numbers seem to have increased in April. To focus in on just April, here is the chart:
“You’ll notice a spike around 17th April. However, since then, European attacks have remained higher in the second half of the month versus the first half of April and the year as a whole.”
