For better or worse, the average person spends a staggering proportion of their personal and professional lives online. As such, the line between our physical and digital identities is blurring. What’s more, the rapid evolution of AI technology, data privacy concerns, and rising cybersecurity threats are making digital identity an increasingly complex and urgent concern.

To understand this misty modern world, we must understand how digital identity evolves– that is what the Thales IAM 360 magazine sets out to do. IAM 360 is dedicated to exploring all aspects of identity, providing fresh perspectives, practical IAM advice, and the latest news on the IAM horizon.

In the last edition, we saw industry titans such as Martin Kuppinger discuss the future of IAM, Jason Keenan question whether we can trust AI in IAM, and Jim Macdonald and Jeff Steadman discuss the success of their Identity at the Center podcast. Here’s a sneak peek of what the ‘Blurred Lines’ edition has to offer.

Identity 3.0 is Here

Bill Nelson, president of Identity Fusion, compares Identity 2.0 and Identity 3.0, claiming that making the transition between the two isn’t merely a technological upgrade but a philosophical shift. According to Bill, Identity 2.0 is vulnerable, inefficient, and, crucially, on borrowed time. Identity 3.0, on the other hand, might be a game changer. Find out why.

The Lines Between Employee and Consumer Identities are Blurring

It’s not just the lines between physical and digital identities that are blurring – the lines between employee and consumer identities are, too. As Jason Keenaghan, Director of Product Management at Thales, discusses, workforce identities are being ‘consumerized’: “Expectations for IAM in the workplace have changed dramatically; user experience (UX) and employee experience (EX) are meeting.”

Trust in the Age of AI and Deepfakes

AI is making it increasingly difficult to trust the content we see online. Over the past few years, deepfakes and misinformation have been rife, particularly during recent election cycles. So, what’s the answer? Philippe Vallée, Executive Vice President of Digital Identity and Security at Thales, asserts that digital identity is essential in the fight against synthetic content.

On the topic of trust, is it possible to totally eliminate bias in machine decisions? Can AI-driven tools detect AI-created deepfakes and synthetic content? In his piece, When Machines Make Identity Decisions, Rik Peters, Director of IAM Engineering, answers these questions.

Regulation Meets Innovation

The technology world is buzzing about AI regulation. And for good reason: nearly three years on from the advent of the AI explosion, regulation is still largely uncharted territory. The European Union is taking the first stab at a comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence with its EU AI Act, but what are its implications for identity professionals and the digital economy? What does the future look like for AI regulation? And does regulation stifle innovation? The latest issue of IAM 360 breaks it down.

Passkey in Payments and Click to Pay

We are, finally, at the tail end of the password era. The password is dead; long live the passkey. As Pedro Martinez, Business Owner for Digital Banking Authentication, puts it: “Passkeys are well on their way to replacing passwords as the main means to access all kinds of digital services.” But did you know that passkeys are playing an increasingly important role in payments and everyday access?

The Simpler Side of Security

IAM 360 also delivers practical advice directly from seasoned experts in the field. Beyond theoretical knowledge, our regular column, IAM Academy, breaks down intricate subjects into easily digestible insights. Sarah Lefavrais, Thales IAM Product Marketing Manager, lends her expertise to demystifying Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), providing a clear, jargon-free exploration of implementing smarter, more effective MFA strategies for enhanced security.

Identity’s Role is Expanding – IAM 360 Explores it All.

Identity’s role is expanding. Digital identities are an essential part of the modern world, enhancing security and fraud prevention, streamlining access to services, improving financial inclusion and accessibility, enabling the digital economy, and much more. But making sense of that expanding role is no mean feat, especially with the digital world evolving as quickly as it is.

Download and explore the entire identity landscape in the spring 2025 edition of IAM 360 to keep pace with new developments and incorporate them into your strategy.
