Following new that DJI have added a privacy mode to its drones to prevent flight data being shared to the internet, Raj Samani, Chief Scientist and Fellow at McAfee commented below.
“Drone security continues to be a key issue. Privacy is just one aspect as drones are fast becoming targets for criminals looking to make a quick buck. This goes beyond using drones for illegal surveillance or hacking into drone systems to steal data. Someone looking to “dronejack” deliveries could easily find a location with regular drone traffic and wait for the targets to appear. Once a package delivery drone is overhead, the drone could be sent to the ground, allowing the criminal to steal the package.
“Many drones are designed to have a quick and easy setup, often using unencrypted communication and many open ports – making them easier to hack. We predict that drone exploit toolkits will find their way to the dark corners of the Internet this year. Once these toolkits start making the rounds, it is just a matter of time before criminals take advantage of them.”
