News broke yesterday that Equifax have gained control of 138 domain names, registered by cybersquatters in the wake of their now-infamous data breach, in order to try and lure customers away from their legitimate ‘Equifax Security’ site for a variety of potentially concerning reasons. Tim Helming, Director of Product Managementat DomainTools commented below.
Tim Helming, Director of Product Managementat DomainTools:
“This is a win for consumers who otherwise might have been defrauded by the illegitimate sites. It also underscores how important it is for companies to take action against cybersquatters through takedowns such as this one. More and more organizations are also proactively monitoring registrations of domains that spoof their brands, in order to get ahead of crime or other illegitimate uses of the name. Such domains can range from nuisances to serious security threats.”
