Following proposals yesterday from the European Commission that member states should share encryption information to get around issues of encryption ‘backdoors’, Jon Fielding, Managing Director at EMEA Apricorn commented below.

“I would feel extremely uncomfortable if governments were missioned to try and break into encrypted devices and communications. The ability to keep personal and sensitive information private is a basic human right. Further, if governments were able to build tools that managed to somehow work around encryption, I would then question whether they could protect them from reaching a wider audience. We have already seen that the US NSA were unable to prevent the backdoors they had developed from being stolen to then manifest into the global WannaCrypt ransomware explosion”
