In the current tense world climate, anything out of the ordinary is going to look like something nefarious. This incident seemed to be less like a DDoS attack and more like a networking/configuration issue.The initial reports of a DDoS attack came from anonymous twitter accounts posting pictures taken from DDoS vendors websites of supposed cyber-attacks from China. This is very likely fake news.
A very similar situation happened in Ireland and the UK on the 27th of April, Virgin Media was down for a short period of time, and an outage was reported. This means anybody using Virgin Media or any service that was piggybacking off Virgin Media infrastructure became unavailable.
The most likely reason for the outage yesterday with the US telecoms providers is a misconfiguration.
