Reports suggest that Facebook is approaching several major cyber security companies with the intention of an acquisition, in order to improve its cyber security procedures and also regain users’ trust. In response to this, please see the below comment from Jake Moore, cyber security specialist at ESET UK, with his thoughts on why this is a positive move from Facebook.

Jake Moore, Cyber Security Specialist at ESET UK:

“After any major attack in a business’ security, which in turn harms its reputation, the first thing to do is to reevaluate the situation to improve company security. Simply burying one’s head wishing it would go away is what so many people tend to favour, which can be, of course, even more damaging. As a world leader, Facebook will be mindful that the rest of the world will be watching so this is excellent practice to follow by promising rapid internal changes with regard to its data and security. Reassessing everything from company policies to reconsidering which antivirus provider is used are all good steps to make stronger defences. Usually the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is justifiable but when it comes to cyber security, it might not always be enough. Far too many company policies are never updated and simply overlooked with a “we’ve always done it that way” attitude.“
