A new paper from analysts at the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) details how Varonis DatAnywhere is removing the tension between employee mobility and heightened security risks – two of the most important and often conflicting challenges faced by IT executives.
The June 2015 ESG Brief, by Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) Senior Analyst Terri McClure and Research Analyst Leah Matuson, is entitled, “Varonis: Secure Enterprise Collaboration and File Sharing.” Varonis Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRNS) is the leading provider of software solutions for unstructured enterprise data. Varonis DatAnywhere is a file-sharing and collaboration solution that enables organisations to turn their existing file-share environments into secure, accessible remote collaboration vehicles without moving or migrating data.
According to the analysts, “IT has been forced to rapidly respond to employee mobility requirements because the alternative is leaving employees to their own devices – literally. Just point and click, and you have a free solution to access your stored files at any time and on your own mobile devices. While this is convenient for employees, it can be one endless headache for IT. They’re being tasked with securing business-critical and sensitive data, and ensuring that employees are correctly provisioned and compliant with governance regulations.”
Until recent years, ESG notes, enterprises did not have good alternatives to cloud-based solutions. With the emergence of solutions like Varonis DatAdvantage, which allows employees to share files and collaborate from anywhere on any device while keeping company data on existing file servers, ESG’s latest research found that most IT professionals want to keep all of or at least some data on-premises. “The drivers behind this . . . are pretty basic – a desire for flexibility and control over where data is stored; the ability to leverage existing infrastructure investments; and a belief that organisations are better suited to protect their own corporate information,” ESG wrote.
“Varonis differentiates itself among cloud-based EFSS [enterprise file sync and share] solutions with DatAnywhere,” ESG writes. “What sets DatAnywhere apart from cloud vendors is that it plugs into an organisation’s existing file share environment – there’s no building from the bottom up. This gives organisations a secure, cost-effective way to simplify collaboration and file sharing, while accommodating the organisation’s existing infrastructure, applications and workflows.”
Enterprise Strategy Group is an integrated IT research firm that is world renowned for providing insight and intelligence to the global IT community. The paper provides insight into the “burgeoning workplace mobility trend” that leaves companies at risk of “losing control of business critical and sensitive data by having it compromised, corrupted, deleted or worse.” With DatAnywhere, Varonis is taking on this security issue in the growing file sharing and collaboration space.
According to the ESG Brief, DatAnywhere further differentiates itself from cloud-based file sync-and-share vendors through its integration with Varonis’ other solutions. When Varonis DatAdvantage and the Varonis Classification Framework are used in conjunction with DatAnywhere, IT is able to gain insight into the company’s file shares, assessing what should and shouldn’t be mobilised or shared and who should have access to it, thereby reducing the risks associated with manual classification and file permissions management.
