On the comments from GCHQ’s cyber quad boss Ciaran Martin on the current cyber threat to the UK, Raj Samani, Chief Scientist and Fellow at McAfee commented below.

Raj Samani, Chief Scientist and Fellow at McAfee:

raj_samani“The reality is, we should always be operating under the assumption that the UK may face another significant cyber-attack in the future. Just this past year, the effects of global campaigns such as WannaCry and NotPetya have shown us the devastation that can be caused by cyberattacks . But as Martin notes, while global campaigns garner the most attention, smaller cyber-attacks are still causing massive amounts of damage to our digital economy.

UK businesses and organisations need to be prepared to defend against this evolving threat. While we often focus on the ways organisations can look to protect themselves from the constant threat of attack, by increasing the focus on actively threat hunting, UK organisations can shift from the offensive to the defensive. Organisations need to ensure that they have automated analysis in place, giving security professionals access to the data they need for greater insight into the inner workings of threats, and the individuals and organisations behind them. Once they have this, organisations will be able to spot a potential threat and protect themselves against it.”
