Google is now offering a new Chrome extension called Password Checkup that is designed to let the user know if their credentials for any website has been compromised in a data breach. If the extension detects that your user name and password have been exposed on the Internet, it will let users know to change their password.

Ryan Wilk, VP of Customer Success at NuData Security:

Every effort counts in the fight to secure and manage passwords. Passwords, while mostly compromised, are still in use, so this will help end users realize their passwords are not as safe as they think. In any case, it’s good practice to update passwords and keep unique passwords for each account. Password managers are helping users create, maintain, and change secure passwords. However helpful, this new Chrome add-on won’t block bad actors as they don’t care if the Chrome alert is flagging a credential. This is why security efforts have to be combined with strong authentication frameworks that identify customers by their online behavior – such as passive biometrics or behavioral analytics technologies. With these technologies, even if cybercriminals steal and use passwords, credentials or devices, they are flagged and blocked.”
