Following the news that the FCC site was subject to a DDoS attack last night, Dr Malcolm Murphy, Technology Director at Infoblox commented below.

Dr Malcolm Murphy, Technology Director at Infoblox:

dr-malcolm-murphy “We’re increasingly seeing cyberattacks used with political intent: from the release of emails from newly elected French President Macron’s party just two days before voters went to the polls, to the recent attack on the FCC over its net neutrality reversal. US government organisations are certainly no stranger to DDoS attacks, and this case truly highlights the importance of organisations prioritising DNS security at a time when commonly deployed cyberattacks are being used to disrupt both political processes and organisations.

The steps to reduce an organisation’s DNS threat level are relatively simple, yet can massively help reduce exposure to attacks; these include learning to recognise when a DDoS attack is taking place; scrutinising their Internet-facing infrastructure for single points of failure; distributing external authoritative name servers geographically to avoid single points of failure; and overproviding their existing infrastructure.”
