Hackers using the Necurs Botnet are now using a new technique to trick victims into opening an email with an archive folder which unzips to a standard folder icon to hide .URL files that automatically download what is known as Quant loader according to Trend Micro. “There’s no end to the innovative techniques which cyber criminals use to deliver their attacks. So, it’s always surprising when they can still revert to tried and tested techniques which have been around for years, as in the recent activity surrounding the long-standing Necurs botnet. However, given the continuing rise of botnet-powered DDoS attacks over recent years, we shouldn’t be so surprised that the perpetrators continue to use whatever works and, often, whatever makes life easiest for them. Either way, it’s more critical than ever to have effective protection in place, whether it’s email spam filters in the case of Necurs, or the latest real-time, always-on, automatic DDoS protection when it comes to botnet-powered Denial of Service attacks.”
