The women at Google are outnumbered by the men, as is the case at almost all technology companies. Even so, talented women are playing major roles in building new technology, and they have some advice for others in the field.
“Do something important, think big, have an ambitious goal about how you can change the world,” Susan Wojcicki, Google’s senior vice president in charge of advertising, said in a session at the company’s I/O developers conference this month.
The advice may sound trite, but it is grounded in real-world experience. Ms. Wojcicki was Google’s 16th employee, joining the company after renting the garage of her yellow ranch house to its founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. She described them as two guys just out of college who audaciously said they planned to organize the world’s information.
