“Pegasus spyware has long been used by governments and police agencies that are in search of ways to monitor the activities of its citizens. While governments, like Thailand will usually admit to “limited” surveillance and device cracking, the fact remains that governments looking to crack down on dissidents will continue to use and misuse spyware like Pegasus.”
“Pegasus has been used and abused by secretive government agencies the world over. Sanctions on Pegasus from the US and EU only started to surface in late 2021. I think prior use by the US and other governments lended Pegasus some sort of false legitimacy, setting a precedent that was followed by more autocratic and repressive regimes. The Thai authorities’ use of Pegasus comes as little surprise given its crackdown on free speech and recent political upheaval. Despots always seem to turn to spying and censorship once they feel they can no longer trust or control the people they claim to represent.”
