Few days back it was reported that two popular gaming sites, Star Trek Online and Neverwinter Online, were struck by DDoS attacks twice in one day. DDoS expert Igal Zeifman, senior digital strategist for the Incapsula product line at Imperva have the following comments on it.

“Some in the industry have stated that these sorts of attacks are commonly used by Internet trolls and rabble rousers to attract attention such as the likes of Lizard Squad, DerpTrolling, and LulzSec. In fact, gaming servers and networks are targeted by three primary groups: competitors looking to divert gamers, upset gamers trying to punish the companies that somehow changed the game or provided inferior service; or gamers who want to shut their game competitors out of the game. There were high-profile attacks on Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network last December by LizardSquad, purportedly to demonstrate the weak security in place on these networks.
“It’s also been said that surviving DDoS attacks has nothing to do with traditional cybersecurity, however, and everything to do with the power and reaction time of network engineers. Just like other forms of cybersecurity, DDoS mitigation requires having defenses in place. Quick reaction time of network engineers is not adequate if a company’s bandwidth is consumed and their routers overrun.
“Cloud-based DDoS mitigation is really the only tenable solution, and can be set up so that attacks are automatically blocked without needing to mobilize the network ops team. Also, application DDoS attacks are the realm of application engineers – game developers. Cloud mitigation can also prevent these.”[/su_note][su_box title=”About Imperva®” style=”noise” box_color=”#336588″]Imperva® (NYSE:IMPV), is a leading provider of cyber security solutions that protect business-critical data and applications.
