“This is a fantastic decision by VW. When done correctly, security manifests trust in a system and for a system. This trust was implicit in the automotive world for many years, but it is now crumbling, and the public is very aware of that fact. Poor embedded security decisions, coupled with false performance claims, have compromised the trust of an entire industry, and a concerted effort by VW to build back that trust through security innovation will pay off in the long run.
“They must focus on the creation of establishing a secure identity for the hundreds of ECUs that cars are built with, and guarantee the data that those ECUs generate is authentic and secure. This will build trust for their product and more importantly, trust for the services that will now be built on top of their product. Today, security and trust don’t differentiate in the automotive world, but you can quickly see a day where your automobile choice is made based on criteria you now apply to a laptop or a smart phone.”
