Cisco is predicting that there will be more cyber attacks designed to destroy systems. Cisco’s 2017 Midyear Cybersecurity Report cited the latest NotPetya attack which is designed to wipe a computer system, as the first of many attacks that will be even larger to come. Edgard Capdevielle, CEO at Nozomi Networks and Corero Network Security commented below.
Edgard Capdevielle, CEO at Nozomi Networks:
“Destruction or disruption of service” (DeOS) has long been the number one concern of critical infrastructure operators when it comes to cybersecurity risk. Now is the time for company boards to take proactive steps to review their security posture, detection and response to ensure their organizations don’t suffer the consequences of a disruption in the vital services such as power, water, transportation, manufacturing or others. Fortunately, despite the predictions and the escalation of threats targeting disruption, there are new advances in monitoring and detection for these critical operations. Artificial intelligence and machine learning allow critical infrastructure operators to detect attacks faster to mitigate damages to the system.”
Sean Newman, Director at Corero Network Security:
“Cisco’s reports of increasing concerns around the extent to which the IoT will likely be leveraged for cyber-attacks in the near future, should leave online organisations in no doubt that having automated, proactive DDoS protection in place is more of a requirement than ever, to ensure an effective mitigation against extensive service disruptions or a smokescreen for more complex multi-vector attacks.”
