“This is a classic example of the “internet of things’ effect. A person gets a bright idea (and the core idea in this case is a good one) but then sets about creating the functional specification without fully thinking out the non-functional requirements including security. Yet again, security is an afterthought rather than something that has been baked-in from the very inception of the product. In doing so, these first versions of the child safety “smart” watches have potentially added to the problem rather than helping to solve it.
It’s clear to me that we need security standards to be developed and applied to all devices that are going to be connected to any kind of network. perhaps something along the lines of the CE or kite marking but related to security aspects of the design.”
