A new Red Alert Research Report from Varonis, based on survey data from 248 information security professionals, indicates that a mere 6% of companies have automated breach detection.
Why is this a problem? Data breaches are on the rise, and according to Verizon’s 2013 DBIR, 67% of incidents take several months to discover! What’s more, 70% of companies find out about breaches through their customers and third parties (such as Government agencies and partners) instead of their own IT departments.
Varonis’ previous research also shows that a great many data breaches can be prevented by implementing basic detective and preventative controls. Monitoring activity and alerting on suspicious behaviour in real-time should be instrumental in any overall data strategy.
