Chinese Hackers Favour Ransomware

Following the recent discovery that Chinese hackers are now moving to ransomware by hijacking machines and demanding payment to decrypt them, here to comment on this news is Chris Carlson, VP of product management at security company Hexis Cyber Solutions on what enterprises can do to identify and isolate these attacks.

“It’s important to remember that Ransomware is a game of cat and mouse. By design, the attack isn’t meant to be sophisticated. Savvy cyber-criminals don’t want to invest time and effort in building a threat that will eventually be discovered.
“However, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t sophisticated mechanisms operating behind the scenes. The perpetuators of ransomware are thinking of the short-term gain and this organised crime is on the rise especially in the healthcare sector, which has traditionally not invested in fraud detection technology.
“When executed successfully, ransomware can allow cyber-criminals to make money from a handful of victims so that they can continue to write new code that has not previously been seen. Endpoint detection capabilities that can automatically detect and respond to new threats are imperative to prevent admins having to pay hackers for access to their own systems. By combining endpoint security and network monitoring that responds at machine speed, organisations are equipped with the resources to identify and isolate any suspicious activity before cyber criminals can even take hold.”
