Rich? This Ransomware Will Charge You More To Unlock Your Encrypted Files

Following the News about a new strain of ransomware that is automatically adjusting its ransom demand for unlocking decrypted files depending on where in the world the victim is, with targets in richer parts of the globe forced to pay higher rates. Andrew Clarke, EMEA Director at One Identity commented below.

Andrew Clarke, EMEA Director at One Identity:

isbuzz-author-male_1“This new, malicious and fiendishly-targeted version of ransomware is to be expected.  It’s not that one could reasonably prognosticate that ransomware would move into the realm of economic indexing, but the increasing sophistication is wholly expected.  Cyber security, or the act of reducing an organisation’s cyber risk, is a never ending battle.  IT, Security and Risk professionals should not be under any delusion that they will make their organisations secure.  The best they can hope for is to make them more secure tomorrow than they are today.  And in so doing, the hackers need to also continually “step up their game” if they intend to continue to make a living hacking honest, law-abiding people and businesses.  For every move the hackers make, we need to make a counter move in the form of better threat detection, more end user education and tighter controls on access.  Once we make those moves, the hackers are back to the drawing board to come up with the next devilish creation that the security vendors can then countermove. It’s a sad, never-ending saga.”
