Facebook Suffers Second Outage

This week’s Facebook outage reinforced what we learned from the AWS outage last week: every high profile internet outage comes at a cost. Facebook and similar digital services have set incredibly high uptime expectations with their users, and interruptions draw these users’ instant wrath. Today’s always-on digital enterprises require always-ready IT and always-on performance.

Whenever a major global player (like Facebook) is plagued by down-time, the impact reaches far beyond lost revenue for the platform itself. While Wall Street estimates hover around $1.7M of lost revenue per hour of downtime, they are missing the bigger picture. If you consider the losses of the companies that use the social network as a platform on which to conduct business, the economic impact (read: losses) is closer to 20 times that of Facebook alone. The same rule applies here for corporate users of digital services: if a line of business application is down, employees cannot do their work, and the opportunity costs can be significant.

Commercial customers who count on Facebook as their gateway to do everything from advertising, to monetising content, to interfacing with customers feel the pain of an outage in a profound way.

Now more than ever, the digital economy requires IT to :

  • Monitor the entire distributed application environment by the second
  • Prepare for failure with automated remediation and the ability to shift workloads from cloud to on-premises and back or from distributed system to mainframe
