Computer Security Day serves as a reminder to keep our data secure as we continuously provide information to web apps that we use every day such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

This reminder is critical for organisations too, as a single data breach can damage not only the financial condition of even the most successful business, but also ruin the careers of those involved.

Fortunately, there are preventative actions that individuals and organizations can take to reduce these risks.

Know where your data resides – for consumers, be aware about what data you put on third party applications and limit this as much as possible. There are some things you simply can’t avoid but there are many more places where it’s not worth the risk to share your data. For businesses, investing in advanced data monitoring, data protection and application security solutions is a must.

Encrypt your data at all times – sensitive data should be protected through encryption while at rest and in transit, which involves ensuring that the websites you visit use secure sockets layer (SSL). You can confirm a website uses SSL by looking for the padlock icon in the URL bar and the “s” in the https://. Businesses and individuals should also protect their data at rest with storage encryption

This Computer Security Day, it’s essential to understand the risks that our devices may bring – but also to be reminded of the measures that can be deployed to prevent cyber-criminals from accessing data.
