Not sure you’re a huge gamer, but Bandai Namco, publisher of Dark Souls, Elden Ring and Soulcalibur, has confirmed it was the target of a ransomware attack by cybergang, Black Cat. This will cripple not only the business, but all of its loyal gamers, putting their own data at risk.

“When we look at what ransomware does, it leverages a user’s (or entity when dealing with non-humans or machines) access within an organisation to encrypt and steal sensitive files. The authentication given to a user defines the level of damage the hacker will do. Therefore, a zero-trust, identity-first approach is critical. To prevent ransomware, you can’t just lock down data, you need a clear method of verifying all identities within an organisation, whether human or machine, and what parts of it they are allowed to access.”

“The attack on Bandai Namco is another example of how relentless cybercriminals are in their search for profit. Ransomware holds victim organizations business operations hostage, which uniquely impacts innovative sectors like gaming, and other organizations that provide daily, direct services to their customers. Such attacks directly affect the victim’s revenue generation and thus provide additional leverage to the attackers in extracting the ransom. SonicWall recorded 304.7 million ransomware attacks in 2021 alone, an increase of 151 percent.”
