Securing Applications Running on 500+ Million DevicesWith more than two-thirds of cyber-attacks targeting applications, run-time application self-protection for mobile, IoT and desktop apps increasingly essential

Arxan Technologies, the leading provider of application protection solutions, today announced that applications running on more than a half billion devices are being protected by Arxan’s security solutions. Arxan technology is protecting mobile, desktop, and embedded applications across a variety of industries, including Financial Services, Healthcare and Medical Devices, High Tech, Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Media, and Gaming.

Arxan’s adoption footprint was pushed beyond the half billion milestone with the customer addition of a popular mobile social media company using Arxan’s code and cryptographic key protection to guard its software development kit (SDK) from being cracked. Arxan’s solution is safeguarding the personal information and application code that resides on the client’s backend server.

“Traditionally, most organizations have focused primarily on securing their networks and devices – and haven’t done too much in the area of application protection,” said Patrick Kehoe, CMO of Arxan. “But, now with applications running on millions of devices around the globe, leaders are realizing that it is virtually impossible to protect all the devices and networks that their applications are leveraging, and this is driving the increased demand we are seeing in application self-protection.”

Popularly reported hacking incidents such as those in the automotive and medical device industries are helping to increase awareness of how vulnerable critical applications are. Security executives and developers across many industries are taking more proactive security approaches to code hardening and key protection. More than 65 per cent of Arxan’s clients are protecting mobile and IoT applications, with the balance focused on desktop and server-based applications.

Arxan is seeing an increased focus particularly in the following areas :  

  • Internet of Things (IoT): Protecting mobile authentication controls and keys stored on mobile devices
  • Financial Services: Preventing tampering of mobile applications that could otherwise bypass security controls and divert payments
  • Healthcare / Medical Devices: Protecting SDKs and embedded and mobile code for medical devices
  • High Tech: Protecting critical libraries and preventing unauthorized access to mobile and desktop applications
  • Gaming: Protecting cross-platform games to prevent cheating

With the proliferation of distributed computing comes increased frequency, scale, and sophistication of security risks as well. Cyber-attacks tend to focus on the most vulnerable areas, which is why more than two-thirds of attacks are targeted at applications. Run-time application self-protection is becoming an increasingly essential solution to help mitigate risks and minimize the impact of these attacks.
