Contract market vacancies grew by +16.65% month-on-month, double the rate of permanent vacancies, in May 2013 across the IT industry, according to the IT Monitor from Computer People. This indicates an increased demand for IT services, with employers seeking to supplement their existing teams with contract staff to meet demand.
Contract vacancies declined by -6.27% year-on-year in May, whereas the permanent market increased month-on-month (+8.96%) and fell year-on-year (-1.51%). This indicates confidence in the economy is growing as companies look to invest to support current, and anticipated, demand.
Demand was unusually high in May 2012 due to the inflationary nature of the summer events particularly the Olympics, especially in the contract market. Demand in permanent jobs increased in application analysts and network engineers. In the contract market there were significant rises for business intelligence and database administration. Only business intelligence recorded a year-on-year increase in the number of vacancies.
