The takeaway of this study for consumers is that they should never enter any information into an online form unless they are certain they will submit it. If I go to register a new account or sign up for a newsletter, type my email address, and then change my mind, the website can still get my email address and possibly other form input without me actually submitting the form. This deceptive practice is used by TikTok, Adobe, Verizon, and other high-profile companies, so it isn\’t a practice limited to small or malicious sites. Because this info is collected without consent or any sort of agreement, website owners can use the info they steal however they wish. This will often result in more spam and phishing emails for end users, among other annoyances and potential threats.
I strongly encourage users to use \”disposable\” email addresses, such as those offered by Gmail or Outlook.com, for use on web forms. Also, a VPN, while not preventing email harvesting on sites, does help cover your online tracks in other ways.
Also, use your browsers anti-tracking features. Visit the Electronic Frontier Foundation\’s \”Cover Your Tracks\” website (https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/) to determine how your browser is seen by web trackers. You can then take steps to plug the tracking holes.
