Leading digital identity expert Intercede have announced that the latest version of its MyID identity and credential management software now gives organisations the capacity to issue and manage trusted identities for machines. Trusted Platform Module (TPM)-protected machine certificates can be used for strong authentication to verify the identity of devices that connect to an organisation’s network, providing a vital piece of an enterprise’s cybersecurity defences.

The development comes as the Internet of Things becomes increasingly prominent, and is designed to help combat the inherent threats it poses. Organisations must have absolute confidence that the devices connected to their networks are the devices they claim to be. Early adopters are expected to come from high security industries, and Intercede will soon commence provision of secure device identities for a major European multinational aerospace and defence corporation.

Allen Storey, Product Director at Intercede commented, “The Internet of Things is more than just hype and requires a change in the way organisations think about security. While protecting sensitive data will continue to be of the utmost importance, the surge in connected devices raises a new security concern; how to trust the identity of these devices.”

Storey added, “Establishing the true identity of a machine or device is a critical element in preventing criminals from gaining control of, or access to, an organisation’s network. Anything that is Internet-connected but unprotected can be compromised, and can provide a wealth of valuable data to criminals. Embedded secure elements combined with device identities managed by MyID mean that organisations can now ensure that machines connecting to a corporate network can be properly identified.”

The addition of device identity management functionality is part of the release of Intercede’s MyID v10.0, which also includes Windows 8 virtual smart cards and a self-service app and kiosk for simple credential lifecycle management. Device identity is supported on TPM-equipped Windows devices.
