Honoring Information Security’s Unsung Heroes

In your opinion, which company or person has had the biggest impact on the information security industry within the last 10 years, and why?

How do you define only one person or one company as having the biggest impact? Even if you have a flash of inspiration and nominate one, chances are that within a couple of minutes or so you will remember someone else and start again.

This statement alone is a testament to our industry. We have so many heroes that are working so hard to make our digital lives safer and more secure. No matter the topic nor the problem each of us face, there will always–and I mean always–be someone there to help or guide you to the answer you are looking for.

Take the recent book I wrote with Brian Honan and Jim Reavis entitled ‘CSA Guide to Cloud Computing’. Within days of the deadline, our paranoia made us quickly realise that we wanted another pair of eyes to make sure the content flowed and made sense. As a result, we had two experts not only read the entire book but also thoroughly review the material.

Our industry is made up of people who may neither have thousands of Twitter followers, nor take the main stage at industry conferences. Yet their contribution make just as big an impact in our industry.

Margaret Mead famously said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
