With the Office for National Statistics today reporting that email is the most common internet activity, it stands to reason that email attacks are becoming increasingly common and email security is paramount. Wieland Alge, General Manager EMEA at Barracuda commented below.
Wieland Alge, General Manager EMEA at Barracuda:
“Results from the Office for National Statistics today confirmed that email is still the most common internet activity, with 88% of adults saying it is the main reason they use the internet. This is concerning against the backdrop of our own research carried out earlier this year confirming yet again that email is the number one way cyber threats get into organisations’ networks: 76% of ransomware attacks came through email.
Compound that with the fact that email phishing is becoming ever more personalised and sophisticated, with cyber criminals masquerading as everything from your boss to your accountant, and there’s a perfect storm brewing. The reason criminals continue to use email within their attacks is simply because it works – humans are often cyber security’s weakest link. Only by prioritising regular and comprehensive cyber security education and training – even for temporary staff or external organisations using your network – can you ensure that your cyber security posture is backed up by good practice.”
